II Encuentro de los Pueblos Zapatistas con los Pueblos del Mundo
This summer's "II Encounter of the Zapatista Peoples with the Peoples of the World" was an amazing experience of travel and discussion through three civilian centers of the Zapatista movement in Chiapas over a period of ten days. Detailed presentations explained the workings of the autonomous, indigenous communities to over two thousand participants from over 40 countries. The next Zapatista encounter will focus on women's organizing and is scheduled for the last days of Dec. 2007 in the caracol of La Garucha. Below are links to audio recordings of the Spanish language presentations about health, education, autonomous government, and collective work.

Este verano el "II Encuentro de los pueblos Zapatistas con los Pueblos del Mundo" fue una experiencia asombrosa de viajar y conversar a través de 3 centros civiles del movimiento Zapatista en Chiapas durante un período de diez dias. Detalladas presentaciones explicaron el trabajo de las comunidades autónomas indígenas a aproximadamente dos mil participantes de alrededor de 40 países. It was during an evening of cultural presentations in the caracol of Morelia, that Subcommander Marcos suddenly arrived on the brightly lit, dramatic new stage surrounded by a group of five indigenous children. Marcos introduced himself and the kids as the collective of "Everything for Everyone; Cookies for Ourselves" ("Para todos todo, Para nosotros galletas"). He explained that the kids were going to provide "special effects" as he read a song... or perhaps a story, entitled "The Little Stone Who Would Not Confirm".
Unfortunately we have not yet found this wonderful story translated into English. If anyone knows of an English translation, please let us know!

Chiapas Indigenous Communities Suffer Attacks
Since the large and public Zapatista gatherings this summer, there has been an upsurge in state and paramilitary violence against indigenous communities throughout Chiapas. Autonomous indigenous authorities have detailed a variety of attacks including:
* the burning of the home of the single mother María López Peñate which left this woman "very sad because she lost all her corn, her cloths, her blankets, her money, her dishes, her corn grinder, her birth certificate, her seed for planning, her salt, and her machete"; 
* violent destructions of the communities of San Manuel and Buen Samaritano by state troopers;
* a brutal attack by members of the paramilitary organization OPDDIC which left Elías Navarro Jiménez, a Zapatista supporter, and his son, Leonardo Navarro Jiménez, serious wounded by gunshots;
* and an ongoing aggression against the "24 of December" Zapatista community which remains under serious threat of having their homes burned.

Desde las grandes reuniones Zapatistas públicos este verano, ha habido una exacerbación de violencia estatal y paramilitar contra comunidades indígenas en todo Chiapas. Las autoridades indígenas autónomas han detallado una variedad de ataques, incluyendo:
*el incendio de la casa de de Maria Lopez Penate, madre soltera, que dejo a esta mujer "muy triste porque perdió todo su maíz, sus ropas, sus cobijas, su dinero, sus platos, su molinillo de maíz, su certificado de nacimiento, sus semillas de siembra, su sal y su machete";
*violentas destrucciones en las comunidades de San Manuel y Buen Samaritano por tropas estatales;
*un brutal ataque por miembros de la organización paramilitar OPDDIC que dejo a Elias Navarro Jimenez, amigo de los Zapatistas y su hijo con heridas serias de bala;
"Chol de Tumbala" Survives Another Year
During the recent Schools for Chiapas delegation to the northern civilian center of Roberto Barrios, the Junta de Buen Gobierno informed our team that although the community of Chol de Tumbala remains under threat of attack and dislocation, the community has survived and returned to their land. After being violently expelled from their community in August of 2006, community members have returned to the land and rebuilt very humble homes. With support from other Zapatista communities the families are once again farming the land.
When the attacks happened last year, we put out an urgent request to our "Bases of Support" to contribute emergency aid to the community of Chol de Tumula. You responded by donating almost $3,000 which helped to purchase emergency food and other essential supplies to support this community. Once again, we thank you for your support. Schools for Chiapas will continue to monitor developments and keep you informed.

Chol de Tumbala sobrevive por otro año
Durante la reciente delegación de Escuelas para Chiapas al norteño centro civil de Roberto Barrios, la Junta del Buen Gobierno le informo a nuestros equipos que aunque la comunidad de Chol de Tumbala sigue bajo las amenazas de ataque y destierro, la comunidad ha sobrevivido y retornado a sus tierras. Después de haber sido violentamente expulsados de su comunidad en Agosto del 2006, miembros de la comunidad han regresado a su tierra y vuelto a construir varias casas humildes. Con el apoyo de otras comunidades Zapatistas las familias están otra vez cultivando las tierras. Escuelas para Chiapas continuara monitoreando los desarrollos y los mantendrá informados.

Oventic Schools for Chiapas Office Dedication
Many hours of indigenous music, a massive community feast, and a powerful traditional ceremony marked the official inauguration of the reconstructed offices of Schools for Chiapas which was held in Zapatista territory in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico early in the summer of 2007. It was late in 2006 when hundreds of local indigenous volunteers added a concrete floor and columns, wooden walls, windows, and electricity to the principal offices of Schools for Chiapas located inside of Caracol II: The Central Heart of the Zapatistas in Front of the World.
The party to celebrate this construction was finally held in June 2006, allowing high school student delegates from both Canada and the United States to join indigenous and non- indigenous supporters to dance, pray, sing, cook, serve, and eat during the day-long event. Schools for Chiapas deeply appreciates the backing and trust of the autonomous indigenous communities in improving this important building for our work; and we thank our supporters (bases of support) from around the world for continuing to make financial resources available for the Mayan peoples of Chiapas.
Dedicació n de los oficinas de Escuelas para Chiapas en Oventic
Muchas horas de música indígena, un abundante banquete comunitario y una fuerte ceremonia tradicional marcó la inauguración de las reconstruidas oficinas de Escuelas para Chiapas las cuales han sido alzadas en territorio Zapatista en los altos de Chiapas, Mexico a principios del verano de 2007. Fue a finales del 2006 cuando cientos de indígenas locales voluntarios añadieron suelo de hormigón y columnas, paredes de madera, ventanas y electricidad a las oficinas principales de Escuelas para Chiapas situadas dentro del Caracol II: El Corazón Central de los Zapatistas ante el Mundo.
La fiesta para celebrar esta construcción fue realizada en Junio 2007, permitiendo a delegaciones de estudiantes de instituto ambas de Canadá y Estados Unidos unirse a los indígenas y a los apoyantes no indígenas a bailar, rezar, cantar, cocinar, servir y comer durante todo el día del evento. Escuelas para Chiapas aprecia profundamente el apoyo y la confianza de las comunidades autónomas indígenas en mejorar esta importante edificación para nuestro trabajo; y agradecemos a los cooperantes (campamentos de apoyo) de alrededor de todo el mundo por continuar haciendo asequibles los recursos económicos para las personas Mayas de Chiapas.

Neem: The Pharmacy of the People
Schools for Chiapas is continuing experimental plantings of Neem seeds and seedlings throughout the five Zapatista zones of Chiapas. Although a number of last year's seedlings did not survive, many communities have experienced great success and the little Neems are happy. Thousands of additional Neem seeds are now being planted in newly formed nurseries and will be transplanted to larger experimental plots during the fall of 2007. Volunteer opportunities are available in Chiapas, Mexico for individuals with experience in growing and processing Neem for medical and agricultural uses.

 Escuelas para Chiapas continua con las plantaciones experimentales de semillas de Neem y plántulas a través de las cinco zonas Zapatistas de Chiapas. A pesar de que en los últimos años varias plántulas no sobrevivieron, muchas comunidades han experimentado un gran éxito y las pequeñas Neems estan felices. Miles de semillas Neem adicionales estan siendo ahora plantadas en nuevos viveros formados y seran transplantadas a grandes terrenos experimentales durante el otoño de 2007. Summer 2007 Delegations:
Diverse and Inspirational
This summer Schools for Chiapas organized travel for a variety of conscientious individuals into a number of Zapatista communities and caracoles over the course of five international delegations. During discussions with indigenous authorities in health, education, ecological agriculture, productive collectives and various levels of indigenous governments, participants left Chiapas with a stronger understanding of the Zapatista movement. Many expressed a desire to continue the struggle for dignity, democracy, and justice in there own communities.
"This week has been packed with information. I have been inspired and humbled by the power and truth of the words of the Zapatistas," pronounced Tom who has now opened a gallery show featuring photos taken during one of this summers' delegations in Chiapas. Continued attention from international communities brings much needed financial resources and moral support to the Mayan communities of the Mexican southeast. "It makes us feel very happy to receive you here because it shows us that we are not alone." repeatedly explained the Indigenous Authorities during the summer of 2007.

Este verano Escuelas para Chiapas organizó un viaje para una serie de individuos concienciados a diversas comunidades Zapatistas y Caracoles a través de cinco delegaciones internacionales. Durante las conversaciones con las autoridades indígenas sobre salud, educación, agricultura ecológica, colectivos productivos y varios niveles de gobiernos indígenas, los participantes abandonaron Chiapas con un fuerte entendimiento sobre el movimiento Zapatista. Muchos expresaron su deseo de continuar la lucha por la dignidad, la democracia y la justicia en sus propias comunidades.
"Esta semana ha estado llena de información. He sido inspirado y humildado por el poder de la verdad de las palabras de los zapatistas". dijo Tom quien ha abierto una galeria mostrando fotos tomadas de la delegación en Chiapas. La continua atención de la comunidad internacional trae recursos económicos y apoyo moral a las comunidades Mayas del sureste mexicano. "Nos hace muy felices recibiros aquí porque muestra que no estamos solos." explicaron repetidamente las Autoridades indígenas durante el verano de 2007.
