Nine-foot high sunflowers are rioting in the
Zapatista corn fields of Lucio Cabanas!
Explosions of color from the swaying yellow
flowers begin long before the sun peeks over
the pine-covered hills and the disorderly
uprisings continue long after the sun
abandons the meandering river and pale moonlight mists cover the
"16th
of Feb.~ The Paul Mann Memorial School and Music
Center".
We've just returned from the highland
Zapatista municipality of Lucio Cabanas (home
to the "16 of Feb. ~ Paul Mann Memorial School) and I can't
shake the images of those swaying blossoms ~
or of the beautiful secondary school students
playing endless games of tetherball, caring
for their animals, splitting wood to cook
their own food, and singing the freedom songs
of their movement late into the night. (Paul
was also with us day and night ~ and he just loved
those yellow flowers! Click here to learn about the school’s namesake, Paul Mann.)
This irascible Indian rebellion remains as
unpredictable as the hues of a flower; but
the movement here still comes from the heart ~ in support of dignity,
democracy, and justice. And like the heart, the Zapatistas say they are always below...and on the left.

La explosión de color de las oscilantes flores amarillas empiezan antes

Acabamos de regresar del municipio de Lucio Cabañas en las tierras
altas de Chiapas (hogar de la escuela "16 de febrero ~ memorial de
Pablo Mann y centro de música") y no puedo borrar de mi mente la imagen
de las flores que se mecen ~ o de los bellos estudiantes de la escuela
secundaria jugando interminables juegos de tetherball, cuidando sus
animales, cortando madera para cocinar sus propios alimentos, y
cantando canciones de la libertad por su movimiento hasta tarde en la
noche. (Paul también estuvo con nosotros día y noche ~ el adoraba esas

Esta irascible rebelión indígena sigue siendo tan impredecible como las
toneladas de una flor; pero este movimiento sigue ascender del corazón
y a la izquierda, por la dignidad, democracia y justicia. Como los
zapatistas siempre dicen que son como el corazón . . . abajo y siempre
a la izquierda.
