While
social activists and indigenous peoples
worldwide continue to celebrate and honor the
ongoing Zapatista struggle for dignity,
democracy, and justice; many philanthropists
remain uncertain about providing much needed
funds directly within the autonomous,
indigenous communities of Chiapas, Mexico.
Funding Zapatista communities is perfectly
legal and enormously rewarding. This four
day tour and conference will show you the way
to begin working with this cutting edge social
movement.
Last summer representatives of Grassroots
International attended an
international gathering sponsored by the
Zapatistas. Their article "A Movement of
Movements: Weaving a Common Dream" is
excellent reading for anyone considering a
trip to Chiapas, Mexico.

The new civilian autonomous, indigenous
governments which are responsible for the
Zapatista health and educational systems, for
ecological agricultural projects, and for
commercial projects such as coffee co-ops and
artisan collectives will welcome your visit

Painting pictures of hope - a new world is waiting to be drawn!
During their sophomore year, students from
Project Pericles at Elon
University choose the autonomous communities
in Chiapas, Mexico
and Schools for Chiapas to be the
beneficiaries of a three year service
project. Last month, these students (who are
now all college seniors) traveled to Chiapas,
to contribute their labor and
learn more
about the Zapatistas efforts to support
indigenous
communities in their struggles for education in
health, literacy, ecological agriculture, and
commercialization. This beautiful
mural is
one of the fruits of their labor!

Safety of travel in Chiapas, Mexico
Leland Larson and Zapatista students are
pictured here at a sports center funded by
the Larson Legacy. Chiapas is a major
international tourist
destination which receives thousands of
national and international
visitors every month. Zapatista civilian
centers are nearby
all major city and highways. Visits to these
centers is safe and legal. Yet the Zapatista
image of rebel Indians wearing masks and
bandannas stirs uncertainty and fear in many
people unfamiliar with the realities and
symbols of Chiapas.
We encourage everyone considering travel to
Chiapas to check the U.S. State Department
travel advisories (at the time of this
writing there are no travel advisories about
Chiapas). Schools for Chiapas also maintains
close contact with Mexican and international
human rights organizations, media, and church
officials to insure the safety and security
of participants on Chiapas travel delegations.
